Leadership highlight:
Group Facilitation and Community Building
Dr. Uradu has demonstrated significant expertise in group facilitation and community building, particularly through her role in co-facilitating a psychodynamic psychotherapy informed group therapy called a sister circle. This group was held weekly at the Connecticut Mental Health Center, and guided by womanist principles.
Womanism, as defined, is a social change perspective deeply rooted in the everyday experiences and problem-solving methods of Black women and other women of color. It aims to address and eradicate all forms of oppression, not only based on gender but also on race, class, and other social categories, while promoting a balanced relationship between people and the environment, as well as incorporating a spiritual dimension.
Dr. Uradu’s leadership in the creation of CMHC’s sister circle focused on creating a supportive and inclusive environment where the voices and experiences of Black women and other marginalized groups are centered and valued. Her facilitation skills ensured that the group addresses issues of oppression in a compassionate manner, emphasizing the interconnectedness of various forms of discrimination and advocating for comprehensive social justice.
By employing these principles, Dr. Uradu fosters a space that not only focuses on the specific challenges faced by Black women but also encourages a broader understanding and action against all forms of social inequity. This method helps to build a strong, resilient community that is equipped to support its members through collective empowerment and mutual respect. More details on Dr. Uradu’s work below.
